Now is the time to plan for your farm’s future

Sometimes it seems like there’s an auction or for sale sign around every corner. The farm landscape is changing, with new challenges rearing their heads every day for farm families intent upon handing their farm down to the next generation

That’s why Ashland Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is partnering with Centerra Cooperative in Loudonville to host a Conservation Chat: Future of the Family Farm on July 11 at Centerra’s Loudonville Location. The event is designed to help farmers explore different farmland preservation and farm transition options.

“Family farm transitions are never easy, and sometimes the hardest part is just starting the conversation,” said Jane Houin, Ashland SWCD director. “As land prices continue to rise, those conversations don’t become any easier. This is a great opportunity for farmers and their families to come together to learn more about their options when it comes to planning for farm transitions and their farmland preservation options if it’s important to them that their land continue to be used for agriculture.”

The event will be held at at Centerra’s Loudonville location off of State Route 3. Participants will hear from Judy Kocab with Ashland County Farmland Preservation. Kocab will explore the different farmland preservation options in Ashland County and will also explain the farmland preservation application process.

Eric Brown from Legacy Capital Advisors will also be on-hand and will share tips and advice on farm business transition planning and how to initiate those tough family discussions. Other topics will include farm business plans, investments, retirement options, and on-farm leadership.

The chat will begin at 6 p.m., and snacks will be provided. Registration for the chat is free but pre-registration is requested. The Registration can be made online at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/conservation-chat-future-of-the-family-farm-tickets-595774436377 or at the Ashland SWCD office by calling Ruth McCrea at 419-281-7645.
