All About Arbor Day will set your trees up for success
When the weather warms and spring arrives, everyone gets in the mood to dig in the dirt and put plants in the ground. That’s why Arbor Day is a great fit for the last Friday or April!
This year, Ashland County residents can get a jump on celebrating Arbor Day with the Ashland Soil & Water Conservation District at their April 22 All About Arbor Day Conservation Chat. The event will take place during the district’s annual tree sale pick up and is designed to help tree sale customers learn how to best care for their trees and understand more about the benefits trees provide our community.
“We have so many customers at our annual tree sale who are excited about adding trees to their home and landscape, but they often have no idea how to actually plant and care for those trees once they get them home,” said Jane Houin, Ashland SWCD Director. “This year wanted to provide a bit of a tree planting and care workshop in coordinating with our tree sale to really give those trees the best chance for survival.”
Participants in the Conservation Chat will pre-register and pay a $10 registration fee. That fee includes a hands-on educational program, snacks, and participants will go home with a free mix-and-match 5-pack of trees from the district’s tree sale extras.
“We’re going to have some great tips for selecting the perfect site for new seedlings and how to care for them from Dolce’s Tree Service,” Houin said. “Then, we’re going to hear from Ashland Mayor Matt Miller on the important role of trees in our community and learn more about Ashland’s Tree City USA designation—a title they’ve held since 1984!”
The tree commission will also conduct a hands-on planting demonstration at the high school.
There’s no guarantee what type of trees participants will go home with - but no matter what species end of in their five-pack of trees, the trees are sure to offer some great benefits to our community.
The All About Arbor Day Conservation Chat will take place at 10 a.m. at Ashland High School on April 22. Registration is $10, and pre-registration is required.
