Windowsill Herbs Provide Fresh Greens for Winter
Winter is approaching and it may not be as easy to get the fresh produce we get to enjoy during the warmer parts of the year. It makes it more difficult to keep those healthy fruits and veggies in our meals. One way to keep some greens in your diet even if it’s just a small amount is herbs. Herbs can be grown inside in windowsill gardens and are relatively easy to take care of. Many herbs are perennials and come back year after year with little maintenance.
Herbs can be used in many different ways. I am sure everyone has tried or heard of tomato basil soup at some point in their lives. That is just one way to use an herb. Herbs bring great earthy tones to any dish that you’re making. Oregano works great for seasoning chicken. Chives are a great option to add an earthy onion flavor for topping any meal you make. When working with herbs you probably only think of using them for lunch or dinner but there are also herbs like mint and rosemary that can be used for desserts!
The best thing about working with herbs is that you can add them to any meal without your children really noticing and they can still receive health benefits from them. Some parents who have a hard time getting their children to eat their vegetables may be able to gain some ground by introducing herbs and new flavors into their diet and slowly introducing vegetables back into their diet with those same herbs and the kids may like it. The use of herbs may increase the child’s preference to some vegetables.
They have even shown that parsley may help regulate blood pressure and build strong bones, sage may even help with diabetes. Pairing these types of herbs would give your children additional nutrients and could also even get them to eat the veggies they used to leave on their plate every time you made them. So this winter when trying to add greens into your diets and trying to get you kids to eat those pesky vegetables maybe try and sprinkle on some herbs!
